DINING CLUB: Navarra Restaurant

This month's dining club brought us to Navarra Restaurant, a Spanish tapas restaurant on Murray Street in the Byward Market.

The restaurant itself is a small space with only a dozen or so tables. The atmosphere was very cozy, with tables side by side allowing us to take a glimpse at our neighbors plates while deciding what to order.

After scanning the drink list, I opted for the Spicy Pineapple Margarita, which was just as delicious as it sounded. It had a perfect balance of sweet from the pineapple, with a hint of spice and the right amount tequila.

As the menu consists of tapas style plates, we opted for 5 sharing plates between the 3 us, which ended up being just the right amount of food.

Our first plate was the Dungeness Crab salad, voted #1 among Ottawa Citizen's top dishes of 2012 in Ottawa. Overall a tasty dish with dried mango, serrano chilis, avocado and vanilla aguachili, however I myself wasn't a big fan of the sesame ash.

Next came the beet salad - which was one of the dishes that I "campaigned" for, and I'm glad I did. This was one of my favorite plates, which was almost like a yogourt parfait with roasted beets. Delicious!

The tomatillo salsa on the Mexican Bricklayer dip was one of my favourite components - it was so good we dug in before snapping a picture.

The two hot dishes that we shared were Rioja potatoes, which had just the perfect amount of spice to cut the coolness of the first 3 dishes. We finished off our meal with Slow Roasted Pork Asado "Gringas" a perfectly balanced taco style dish with fresh avocado and pineapple that neutralized the richness of the pork.

Each of us opted to finish our meal with an indiviual dish instead of sharing. I chose the Creme Brulee, which was delicious, but definitely a substancial size for 1 person. I probably should have shared this. My boyfriend Matt had the panna cotta, his favorite plate of the night offering just the right balance of chocolate to chili. Isabelle's cheese plate was beautifully presented and a great way to finish off a rich meal.
